I’ve read of the old wives’ tale that holds if you hear a hen crow it means that you’re going to die, but being disgustingly healthy and not a superstitious sort, I don’t give that any credence. And there’s an old saying, “Whistling girls and crowing hens always come to some bad ends,” but I’ve always thought it was just one of those aphorisms designed to keep tomboys in line. I never knew that a hen would, or even could, crow like a rooster.
